December 7, 2011: Heavy Plastic

Now Jeff Lebowski won't listen.  I played Creedence last week! Looking for an LP of bowling strikes.
Some heavy music, some is light hearted, some is less so. You know that feeling when someone has been telling you to listen to some album for ages and then you do and it re-defines your universe? Melvins, Bad Brains...

Nice lair, Crimewave.
Also some surprisingly good music from Anvil and we let Hawkwind play us out.

Robot News Human? Robot pick a side! Robots show their human side.

November 30, 2011: Good News About the Creedence

Hard to resist an album with a cover like this.
This week we started off with a rare-find EP compiled of Afro-funk from singles recorded by an outfit called the Psychedelic Aliens. While they are pefhaps remembered more for their name and signature "Psycho African Beat" than any exceptional music, this Academy release is worth it just to drop into that time and place of Ghana in the late sixties. The large booklet in the vinyl release is also worth a glance.
I defy anyone to create an inner sleeve that is anymore hip. Okay, maybe if the cat had a moustache.
New music from Quest for Fire's Chad Ross. Very similar to Quest's sound this is a little more dreamuy and guitarey.

Eno's leavings beat most other's mains.

Left over from this year's "Drums Between the Bells", the music of Eno and the words of Rick Holland are extended with this EP. A decent afterthought to enjoy on a crisp late winter morning.

This week's robot news claim is truly staggering, a can-bot that seems to recognize itself in a mirror and a claim that it is self-aware. Before you get all "...not just ro-bot, Number 5 is... alive!" pn us, we have not been able to verify who exactly performed this research and whether the claim is accurat or plausible. The bot is possibly the child of "Thecorpora Robot Company" who appears to have posted a blog explaining the experiment. Certainly no academic institution seems to be associated with this claim much less any published paper setting out what is meant by "self-aware" or demonstrating that this has occurred. This could be an exaggeration, or an all out hoax.

October 12, 2011: The Sand In Your Eyes

Exact.

Sun o))) and Boris at ATP 2010, I should be somewhere near the front left. I was tired sweaty and all my cells were vibrating.

Some music can only be truly appreciated when you have not slept for more than 36 hours. This is some of that. I will be on hiatus soon for 4 weeks and will try to pre-record. Look forward to the band Sleep in one of those shows, really couldn't edit any of that for this broadcast.

October 5, 2011: Life is Precious, and God, and the Bible

'Course it's a good idea!
Whether it be religion, deity, or parasitic meme, the Jesus and his super best friends etc. sure have generated some interesting sounds over the millennia. The Sand took a trip into to the sacred and the blasphemous this week. Or maybe it was just another excuse to play Hoof-prints on the Ceiling of my Mind.

The Super Best Friends. Can't we all just get along and combat the real problem... David Blaine?

No faith and want some? Try this.
Got faith and want to lose it? Check this out.
Want it back? Go here.
Don't want to decide? Sit back and enjoy the ride.

I prefer my gods to carry a hammer and ride goat-pulled chariots.:

Thor, God of Thunder, Farming and Law. (Before his recent new-age-shroom-trip-Brannagh makeover.)
Oh yeah. I've mentioned it before, but this really is a good show:

The Book of Mormon, the Musical! (In 1978 god also created Corvette Summer)
By the way, the Avenue Q guy is Robert Lopez

To fully understand the title of this episode, watch THIS episode (particularly part 2).

Robot News
I am sure that someone in Japan will soon succeed in a claim that a robot has a soul. Until then, robots can continue as indentured slaves!

September 28, 2011: Curried Souljazz Birds

I always felt the theme for As It Happens sounded like The Stones' Satisfaction

I also feel that Bison Eyes from Quest for Fire's "Quest for Fire" recalls, Iron Maiden's "Iron Maiden" from Iron Maiden

And virtually identical album covers!
Tonight's selections were pretty random, other than I am all about Ravens and Crows as I read A Song of Ice and Fire. Accordingly, three bird songs. I declined to bring you the Beatles' Blackbird to colour coordinate the three-play. Who needs to hear that when we can play The Flock?

September 7, 2011: Back In Our Schools

Nerd Alert Stanley!

Funkadelic, I see many 'Back to School" clothing ideas.

Study hard and hunker down Queensians, winter is coming.

I journalized a second story(*) of the robot mundane. A second "injured" robot is described in this week's news. I may start a sub-feature on instances when robots are reported in the media as members of our society, rather than tools.

August 24, 2011: Plastic Cloud to Blood Ceremony

Blood Ceremony's Alia O'Brien
White Hills playing at Kutcher's Resort, ATP 2010
Tonight's broadcast featured was a welcomed venture into great music past, but mostly present in the space-stoner-psychedelic realm. I don't have much to say other than to note that it is nice to see that two of the bands include female members whose instruments are instrumental.

August 17, 2011: Smooth Sailing

The Iconic Yacht Rock Album
What do hard rockers Van Halen and McDonald-era Doobie Brothers have in common? Yacht Rock Producer Ted Templeman!
Kenny Loggins swims a life vest over to Michael McDonald , in the shape of "What a Fool Believes"... within barf-scent range of castaway Jimmy Messina.
You MUST check out the Channel 101 series to truly understand the proliferation of flawless smiuothe miusique that dominated the airwaves from 1976 to 1984, and its distinction from rock and pop and soft rocking. It is none of those things, it is Yacht Rock!

Yacht Rock progenitors,  JD Ryznar, (Michael McDonald)  , David B. Lyons (Koko Goldstein), "Hollywood" Steve Huey and Hunter Stair (Kenny Loggins), at the launch of Yacht Rock 12 in NYC, 2010
Here is an incredibly simplified Venn diagram:

Note, no yachts required.

August 9, 2011: Space Is Deep(ends)

I would love to see a movie version set in the late 1800s.
If you are a regular listener, you will have heard the topic of outer space raised in previous episodes. Why an entire space show this time? The answer lies in Peterborough. I picked up Pac-Man Fever and the Yes Album in the electric city last week. I couldn't bear to play the title Pac-Man track, but found the assortment of video game sounds circa 1980 to be particularly fun, especially The Defender. Couple that with Star-ship trouper from Yes, and we have a theme.

This picture is somewhat misleading as to the graphics contained therein.
Great reason to play some Hawkwind!

Searching for Space?
Robot news this week is arguably, hum drum. But perhaps it is a great statement of our times that despite the economic pressures, we are still sending robots to Jupiter

There is other space news which I cannot resist noting. Scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Institute for Astrophysics have apparently used Kepler data to locate the Harkonnen home world of Geidi Prime!

Space findings! Blacker than coal!

Ended things off with Journey of the Sorcerer, the best thing the Eagles ever did, thanks to Douglas Adams' use of the tune.
