February 22, 2011: The Can and Other Good Musics

The Can, with Malcolm Mooney

A great record store and great advice from CKCU DJ's Bijon and John have resulted in a trove of great music for me to explore. Particularly, Krautrock pioneers Can. I have been intent on exploring Can for some time now, so it was with much pleasure that I picked up two releases Monster Movie and "Delay" (a compilation of early singles/demos(?))

It's always transcendy to find music that makes you feel like you've been wasting your life when you hear it for the first time. This is what happened to me with the Pixies, more on that roller-coaster relationship in a future post. Needless to say, it is an ineffable mixture of joy and regret, one which I find myself embroiled in once again with Can. Not so much regret here as there was little chance that I could have seen Can live in their heyday.

After listening to the instoted improv vocals of Malcolm Mooney and the repetitive gunked-out bass lines of Holger Czukay in these two early releases, it is clear to me that Can are also precambrian developers of Acid Toilet Rock. More on that in the future too.

A citrussey stomach, non?

After Can, I played three of my new records and then some not new records. Very stoked about finding Conifer.

I think I am going to end the weekly version of Song for New Moms. It is too tricky to meld in a soft lullaby when so much of what I play is an unfortunate contrast. Look forward to more "bad songs that rock".

February 15, 2011 - Gerrit Ow!

From White Hills' A Little Bliss Forever
This week was a bit of an investigation into what is generally called "stoner rock". I was once told that this genre is essentially anything that traces its origin in some way to Black Sabbath. So we started with the Sabbath's the Wizard. Hard to pack in much content with a theme like this in one hour. Did manage to play the whole first side of White Hills' A Little Bliss Forever and a decent chunk of Flower Travellin' Band.
I also played some Linus Pauling Quartet, just to keep it real. Ended with Richie Havens and one of my all time happiest record surprises.

Robot News was positive this week, but I admit, dull.

Song for new Moms was inspired by the Minimalism of the preceding show.

February 8, 2011: Gimme Some Money

Randy Newman Sells In
It is funding drive. Please donate to support the excellent and unparalleled variety of programming found only at CFRC. We had a bit of a theme tonight, spawned by the funding drive and my recent purchase of Aquaturbia's first album. I was delighted by the expansive liner notes in this re-issue, replete with nostalgasms from the flowery period in Chile in the 60's before the 1st 9/11 as well as an honest account of the reasons for the naked cover: they wanted to get noticed.

We played some music satirizing selling out and tracks from albums with cover art following along with Aquaturbia's approach either ironically or not

Robot news was a special treat. Not news but a clip from Douglas Adams' Hitch-Hiker "trilogy" featuring Marvin the Paranoid Android.

February 1, 2010: Coffee and Cigarettes

Music which represents a kind of cultural malaise that set in in 1988, just before my high school years, sparked by the recent acquisition of  My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything. Kevin Shields and crew simply could do no wrong. I am very familiar with Loveless but had never listened to the combo's first album. I've wasted so much time...

My Bloody Valentine
The tunes played tonight tried to capture a feeling surrounding a kind of music in the late eighties and early nineties. Not a good time, unless you were in Eastern Europe. Reagan and Thatcher were going out, but what was coming in? We didn't know the cold war was going to end and there was a general feeling of blah and "so what"? I guess I am talking about Gen X. Musically, I think this late new wave/post punk, self-indulgent faux darkness ended with the cold war. Music fuelled by cafeine an nicotine instead of the coke of the 80's, booze of the 70's or acid of the 60's.

C & C Music factory and Black Box filled our high school cafetorium during dances. I was all over the place. I remember buying Sinead O'Connor and Maestro Fresh Wes at the same time at the Bayshore Sam's. I also luckily picked up a cassette called Automatic by The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The Robot News this week is, again, very depressing and serious. I promise more fun robots next week.

The final track, from the Grateful Dead's 1971 live album was, I hope,  sufficiently soothing after the angst of this broadcast.
