February 22, 2011: The Can and Other Good Musics

A great record store and great advice from CKCU DJ's Bijon and John have resulted in a trove of great music for me to explore. Particularly, Krautrock pioneers Can. I have been intent on exploring Can for some time now, so it was with much pleasure that I picked up two releases Monster Movie and "Delay" (a compilation of early singles/demos(?))

It's always transcendy to find music that makes you feel like you've been wasting your life when you hear it for the first time. This is what happened to me with the Pixies, more on that roller-coaster relationship in a future post. Needless to say, it is an ineffable mixture of joy and regret, one which I find myself embroiled in once again with Can. Not so much regret here as there was little chance that I could have seen Can live in their heyday.

After listening to the instoted improv vocals of Malcolm Mooney and the repetitive gunked-out bass lines of Holger Czukay in these two early releases, it is clear to me that Can are also precambrian developers of Acid Toilet Rock. More on that in the future too.

After Can, I played three of my new records and then some not new records. Very stoked about finding Conifer.


I think I am going to end the weekly version of Song for New Moms. It is too tricky to meld in a soft lullaby when so much of what I play is an unfortunate contrast. Look forward to more "bad songs that rock".
